Tell all the truth but tell it slant
-Emily Dickinson
Writer. Educator. Storyteller. Communicator. Researcher.
I’m Emily Mulvihill, a writer and educator interested in how stories shape place, identity, and belonging. Currently completing my Ph.D. in Literature at the University of California, Riverside, I study nineteenth-century American literature with an eye toward how narrative connects local and global geographies. My work has been published in Literary Geographies and is forthcoming in J19: The Journal of Nineteenth-Century Americanists.
My path has always been rooted in communication—whether through teaching, research, or collaborative storytelling. Over the past several years, I’ve taught courses in writing, literature, and media studies. During that time, I've worked to design classrooms that help students connect complex ideas to lived experience. Beyond the university, I’ve worked as a writing tutor, residential assistant, and managing editor, experiences that honed my ability to translate specialized knowledge into accessible, meaningful stories.
I’m especially drawn to work that bridges research and public understanding: projects that make academic or institutional narratives clear, grounded, and human. Across teaching, research, and writing, I’m motivated to help ideas reach the audiences they’re meant to serve.
Now, as I expand my work into communications and storytelling beyond academia, I’m focused on connecting research-driven insight with creative strategy. I’m interested in helping organizations, campuses, and communities share their stories in ways that are authentic, inclusive, and intellectually grounded by bridging the gap between deep knowledge and public impact.
